brand new album from field musics peter brewis. this is an album of beautifully quirky and very lush psyche pop sounds with hints of everything from brian wilsons solo work to the pure jerky pop of xtc. its a really expansive collection of layered sounds full of drama and plenty of pure melodic pop moments. some of the orchestration reminds me slightly of the dramatic chamber pop sounds of sufjan stevens but brewis gives the overall sound more of an edge with jerky almost post punk like bass guitar. if you file your music by genre then this one will give you a real challenge and i love albums that can do that. an always changing but very melodic collection with enough twists and turns to keep everybody happy. august 2008

stereolab return with their first full length studio album since margerine eclipse in 2004. the album features thirteen new tracks written by laetitia and tim gane along with one solo gane composition. the album also features the superb brass arrangements by sean o hagan from the high llamas. this is probably one of the finest selections of pure sunshine pop you are likely to hear all year. its back to basics classic stereolab with a huge injection of bossa nova fun and heaps of brass. august 2008

KITTY DAISY AND LEWIS - KITTY DAISY AND LEWIS [SPECIAL OFFER, NORMALLY RETAILS AT €16.99]
finally the debut album from this teenage three piece arrives on the sunday best label. the band are aged between 15 and 18. the album was recorded entirely on old analog equipment for true authenticity and just one blast of their totally retro old school fifties rock n roll and you will appreciate why they did that. this genuinely sounds like some old rare unearthed gem from the early fifties as this trio tackle a few older gems along with a couple of their own tunes. the album actually opens with a rather stunning new version of the track going up the country made famous by canned heat. this is quite simply just top quality party music. it may also be totally retro but when its played this well then who really cares. august 2008

JOSH RITTER - LIVE AT THE 9 30 CLUB [this cd is released on friday the 5th of September]
very very limited irish only release from josh ritter on the independent label. this live album was originally released earlier this year in america only as part of the worldwide record store day celebrations. the album was recorded in the 9 30 club in washington for national public radio. this new irish only version comes with two extra exclusive bonus tracks and 3 live videos recorded in waterford during his last tour here. the full tracklisting for the album now features minds eye, to the dogs or whoever, rumours, the temptation of adam, right moves, real long distance, lawrence ks, next to the last romantic with the bonus live tracks wildfires and california. the live videos are for lillian egypt, overnite and real long distance.

very limited edition grey vinyl only release featuring two damn fine irish based outfits collaborating together. queen kong are a pulsating cork based electro clash outfit and are joined by the giddy two piece dj extravaganza youre only massive. the album features ten slices of heavy electro, electro clash and just good old style throbbing electro disco sounds. the band are joined by guitarist leanne harte for this one adding lots of clever rock guitar riff action. some of the album kind of reminds of peaches on a more pop buzz or even chicks on speed but with more talent. august 2008

BEACH HOUSE - DEVOTION [DOUBLE VINYL]
album number two from this two piece centred around victoria legrand and alex scally. this is an album of real understated beauty in a similarly stripped down style to the likes of mazzy star or cat power. there is an atmosphere similar at times to the slow core of the likes of low but with a slightly more avant folk feel to it. its full of laid back smokey sounds with lovely hammond organ sounds and the gentlest guitar strumming. legrand has one of those sultry voices that you will instantly fall in love with forever. a real gentle gem of an album. limited edtion double vinyl pressing in gatefold sleeve. american import on the carpark label. august 2008

BROADCAST 2000 - BUILDING BLOCKS
broadcast 2000 is the creation of just one man joe steer and this is his debut solo album on the gronland label. steer is a very talented multi instrumentalist with the album featuring double bass, cello, ukele, guitar, glockenspiel, banjo, percussion and beautifully looping sampled vocal sounds. imagine if you had five sufjan stevens in the same room singing and playing at the same time. the sounds are not quite hitting the dramatic sounds of sufjan stevens but there is quite a similar feel about the songs with maybe just a bit more added folk pop thrown in on this one. the album was recorded and mixed in his home studios in london. august 2008

BRENDAN CANNING - SOMETHING FOR ALL OF US [BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE PRESENTS]
the first solo album from brendan and the second in a series of releases under the broken social scene presents series. along with broken social scene canning was also a member of by divine right, valley of the giants and hhead. the album also features guests spots from bss members kevin drew, justin peroff, jimmy shaw and lisa lobsinger. the album features some really catchy uptempo indie rock sounds not too far away from his current band with maybe just a little bit more of the slacker indie rock of the likes of pavement or sebadoh included. the album comes in a lovely three part foldout card sleeve. august 2008

ALELA DIANE - THE PIRATES GOSPEL
now heres a real understated gem of a folk record that managed to pass us by on its original release late last year. an album steeped in the early folk sounds of the twentieth century whilst also sounding totally modern at the same time. its has a little bit of the seventies american psyche folk sound coupled with the more weird side of folk music ala devendra banhart, joanna newsom or marissa nadler. its a beautifully raw collection featuring mostly just acoustic guitar and dianes truly amazing vocals. probably one of the most perfect late night folk albums you are likely to hear in quite some time. august 2008

DIANOGAH - QHNNNL
this post rock outfit have been on a long break since their last album millions of brazilians in 2002. the band return with a slightly new sound adding vocals this time to their ultra lush brand of slighly jazzy tinged post rock sounds. multi instrumentalist andrew bird adds violin to several tracks on the album. the album falls somewhere between the jazzy post rock of karate and the much more aggressive sounds of slint or shellac. features some lovely intricate guitar work which works so well with the addition of birds lush string sounds on the more mellow tunes. august 2008

a limited edition vinyl release of two tracks taken from their recent debut ep which appeared on cd only on the fifa label. the a side features jake summers which is one of the finest pieces of shouty electro rock you will hear all year. imagine the pixies or the breeders with the attitude of the riot grrrl scene complete with old style casio keyboards. the flip side features battlestations which kinda sounds a bit like a more lo fi stereolab with gravely shouty vocals. limited edition 7" pressing on the cool for cats label. september 2007

KASAI ALLSTARS - CONGOTRONICS VOLUME THREE
the crammed discs label returns with the third volume in their truly amazing congotronics series of african recordings. this new volume features a collective formed by members of lusombe madimba, tandjolo, dibua dietu, basokin and masanka sankayi. the album is very much in a similar style to the totally hypnotic sounds of the konono no1 album from a few years back and features the trusted finger piano again. its very much a rhythm based dance music with tons of energy and group chanting. its a real goodtime kind of jazzy african vibe and if you liked the first volume featuring konono no1 then you will simply adore this new one. comes with a highly detailed booklet with great liner notes and photos. august 2008

the debut full length for twisted nerve from julie margat aka lispector. margat has several self released albums to date and this new one follows on from her contribution to the bearded ladies compilation. the album features a quality blend of quirky folk sounds and classic lo fi bedroom diy indie vibes. its sounds like margat will pretty much try play anything that is put in front of her as the album us jam packed with all sorts of instruments and found sounds. there are moments that remind of the likes of leila or solex whilst also having the organic lo fi feel of kimya dawson. august 2008

ONEIDA - PRETEEN WEAPONRY [LIMITED EDITION 180 GRAM VINYL WITH BONUS MP3 DOWNLOAD]
album number eight from oneida and possibly one of their finest albums to date too. the album comes as three lenghty tracks merging into one truly awesome 40 minute long album. if you are a fan of psychedelic stoner rock sounds then you could quite possibly be looking at your early contender for ablum of the year here. the album is a big aural assault of sludge like stoner rock with tons of psyche and prog like influences in tow. its a real slow burning piece of improv jam like sounds with a bit of everything from early hawkwind, kyuss and the early sounds of krautrock experimentalism ala cluster etc. its probably one of the most trippy adventures in music we have heard in quite some time with a really mind melting blend of totally fuzzed up guitar sounds and oscillating synth sounds. imagine can and kyuss working together on the old desert sessions albums for mans ruin. truly awesome stuff. the album comes on limited 180 gram heavy vinyl and is packaged in a lovely heavy card gatefold sleeve. the album also comes with a bonus mp3 coupon for a free download of the entire album. august 2008

the debut album from this new shoegazing and dream pop obsessed outfit. this outfit take all the best elements from bands like jesus and mary chain, my bloody valentine, cocteau twins and slowdive to create an album of pure dreamlike pop and rock sounds. if you take the haunting female vocals from my bloody valentine and add the guitar sounds of the cocteau twins to the minimal drum sounds of early jesus and mary chain. then throw in layers and layers of pure guitar driven fuzz and white noise. i wont deny its been done before but when its this haunting and melodic then just lay back and enjoy the ride. august 2008

the return of the tap dancing indie pop outfit with their third album to date. this outfit from omaha have a very unique sound as they incorporate tap dancing members into their percussion driven brand of high energy shouty indie rock. the band have a perfect middle ground between the punk rock diy vibes of the riot grrrl movement and the totally infectious indie rock of the breeders. its very very catchy at times whilst also retaining a nice rough edge to it thanks to the sometimes snarly vocal delivery. the album comes in a lovely card sleeve with cutout front feature. august 2008

this japanese poet has been making psychedelic folk music for nearly 40 years now and finally we can get our hands on a reasonably priced album thanks to the psf label releasing this new one. the album sounds like a medieval japanese take on the sounds of early tom waits. the album is full of strange medieval folk instruments over which kazuki lays his very dramatic almost burlesque like vocal sounds. there are plenty of late sixties psychedelic folk influences in here too along with the odd hint of traditional british and irish folk. wonderfully strange stuff. august 2008

whilst its probably fair to say that bright eyes is a solo venture from conor oberst this is in fact the first full length official release under his own name. oberst headed off to mexico with the mystic valley band to record this new collection and its very much a collection of rootsy folk rock sounds in some way carrying on from last years bright eyes album cassadaga. the album if full of rootsy guitar action of lots of organ and piano sounds reminscent of the band and those early roots rock bands. it may be released under his own name but this is still bright eyes as far as sounds and songs go. limited edition 180 gram vinyl pressing in heavy card gatefold sleeve. august 2008

ATLAS SOUND - LET THE BLIND LEAD THOSE WHO CAN SEE BUT CANNOT FEEL [PLUS ANOTHER BEDROOM EP]
solo album from deerhoof frontman bradford cox now on the 4ad label. the album was compiled by cox using a selection of different sources from found sounds to old cassettes to music boxes and all sorts of laptop sampling software. the end result is much more musical than you might imagine considering the source material. cox adds beats, guitars and vocals over most of the tracks to create something that at times sounds a bit like animal collective covering classic shoegazing sounds. he multitracks his voice over pulstating sampled live drums, organ sounds and lots of looping sound effects. imagine if the flaming lips were to record an entire album on a laptop. its an incredibly enjoyable album with a lovely warm feel to it particularly with the addition of live guitars and bass. limited edition vinyl pressing on the kranky label. the album comes with a bonus vinyl featuring the recent ep another bedroom. august 2008

BEEN IN THE STORM SO LONG - SPIRITUALS FOLK TALES AND CHILDRENS GAMES FROM JOHNS ISLAND
a collection of african american sounds from johns island in north carolina from the early sixties. 28 track collection originally release as two separate folkways vinyl albums. its a really beautiful insight into a long lost world of traditional songs and the way of life of the islands inhabitants. the album features a host of traditional call and response work songs, gospel songs, childrens rhymes and group spirituals. comes with the usual high standard liner notes too. 1990

BON IVER - FOR EMMA FOREVER AGO [SPECIAL OFFER, NORMALLY RETAILS AT €18.99]
bon iver is songwriter justin vernon and this is his debut release on 4ad. the album was recorded in total isolation in a cabin in wisconsin and you can really feel the intimate and at times almost wintery atmosphere. its a beautiful collection of simple lo fi folk ballads but his voice gives the album a totally soulful feel. its got a similar rustic quality to early bonnie prince billy, songs ohia or phosphorescent buts it the voice that makes if differ from all of the above. vernon makes superb use of multilayered vocals making it sound like the beach boys doing acoustic gospel music. this is one of those rare slow building quiet gems that takes a few listens to really discover its true beauty. may 2008

DIRTY THREE - DIRTY THREE
the self titled debut album from 1995 finally gets reissued by the bella union label at mid price, the album was originally released on the anchor and hope label, the features seven classic examples of this violin led trio at their most explosive and probably the closest thing to their live performances, whilst their later album were much more laid back and meditative this one is full on noise at times with both guitar and violin given the heavy distortion treatment, april 2007

the first single to be taken from their brand new album the hawk is howling. the flip side of the single features a brand new track with guest vocals from the legendary vocalist with the 13th floor elevators roky erickson. this is probably one of the heaviest pieces of music to date from mogwai. the track pretty much opens up with thunderous metal edged guitar riff action and carries on for five blissful minutes of pure drone metal noise. its more avant metal than post rock this time with a track that brings to mind the likes of isis or even neurosis.

the first album in nearly four years from the new year and finally the long awaited follow up to the end is near. the band features ex members of the legendary underground outfit bedhead and chris brokaw on drums. the full lineup for this album is matt kadane, bubba kadane, peter schmidt, mike donofrio and brokaw on drums. the album features ten brand new gems much more reminscent of their bedhead days than antying to date so far. the band have introduced heaps of piano into the mix on this album to complement their unique three guitar sound. this album is like the most beautiful post rock with vocals and hints of early roots rock. imagine a more sedate built to spill meets the sombre vibes of low or codeine.

A Brief History.
Road Records is based in Dublin, Ireland and is a totally independent music store and mail order service specialising in indie, alternative, underground rock, electronica, punk, reggae, country, folk, blues and whatever else takes our fancy. The store is run by two human beings, Julie and Dave, so you are guaranteed a personal touch when you shop with us.

KEEP INDIE STORES ALIVE (not just us, all of them) - support your local store and not those damned "multinationals" and "dreaded supermarkets" who know nothing about real music. We are well aware that music can be purchased from many online retailers these days at cut down prices but lets face it, who wants a world without small dedicated shops all over the world, with staff that know a thing or two about music.
