-Our Favourite Record Of The Day

CALDER - LOWER
this is a really really beautiful collection of mellow post rock meets lush warm electronica from the make mine music label. calder is a new project featuring larus sigurdsson and olafur josephsson who has also recorded under the name of stafraenn hakon in the past. its a really lovely collection of part sigur ros and part boards of canada. try to imagine the likes of boards of canada or early four tet in a slightly more ambient mood meets the totally dream like sounds of sigur ros. no once else but the icelandic can make this kind of lush post rock which somehow manages to evoke the images of icy fjords whilst also having a beautiful warm feel about it. a really stunning mix of droning electronica, piano, live guitars and all manner of strange stringed instruments too. lovers of the likes of kranky, mum, harold budd, sigur ros, johan johansson, max richter and more will just adore this perfect headphone collection. november 2008

KATIE KIM - TWELVE
the debut solo album from this irish based singer katie sullivan. she was also a former vocalist with indie rock outfit dae kim along with former ten speed racer member terry cullen. this is a beautifully intimate collection of songs centred around sullivans beautifully husky voice. the album has a similar kind of intimacy to the likes of mazzy star with hints of the early aggression of pj harvey or the more folky based late night feel of cat power. the album features some lovely background instrumentation with subtle touches of slide guitar, brushed drums and mellow electronic effects. its that kind of eclectic collection that reminds of the glory days of labels like 4ad and their collaborative this mortal coil projects. it really is a wonderful collection of laid back late night sounds featuring a voice to die for. november 2008

BONNIE PRINCE BILLY - IS IT THE SEA [THE IRISH AND SCOTTISH TOUR]

CAP PAS CAP - WE ARE MEN
this irish based outfit return with their second vinyl release. this new ep follows on from their stunning debut not not is fine from 2006. the ep opens up with the original version of we are men with a big pulsating punk funk bass riff providing the backbone for a really uptempo piece of no wave complete with eighties synth action. richie egan aka jape gives the track a bit of eighties electro pop treatment on his remix with a big throbbing drum machine and hypnotic looped vocal treatments. that boy tim opens up the second side with lots of added funky guitar sounds. the decal remix closes the ep and its probably the pick of them for me. its a superb piece of heaving guitar heavy industrial space rock sounding a bit like godflesh with a punk funk fixation. its all very hypnotic and quite dark and menacing too. december 2008

-Our Independent Irish Catalogue

A Brief History.
Road Records is based in Dublin, Ireland and is a totally independent music store and mail order service specialising in indie, alternative, underground rock, electronica, punk, reggae, country, folk, blues and whatever else takes our fancy. The store is run by two human beings, Julie and Dave, so you are guaranteed a personal touch when you shop with us.

KEEP INDIE STORES ALIVE (not just us, all of them) - support your local store and not those damned "multinationals" and "dreaded supermarkets" who know nothing about real music. We are well aware that music can be purchased from many online retailers these days at cut down prices but lets face it, who wants a world without small dedicated shops all over the world, with staff that know a thing or two about music. Do we want to spend the rest of our music shopping days stuck in front of a computer, think about it, never getting any form of human contact whatsoever. Small bands and labels will know what we mean when we say you need us as much as we need you, so think about it the next time you press the buy button with places like cdwow, play and those other evil below cost sellers.
